Circularity & Recycling

Maximising sustainability and circularity in packaging

Great packaging keeps goods in pristine condition, minimises waste and maximises retail sales potential. For the food industry, it extends shelf life and reduces food waste.

Great packaging at Eco Flexibles means two things – selecting the right production processes to ensure sustainable supply chains AND selecting the right materials.

At Eco Flexibles, we use a sustainable prepress process utilising water washable flexographic plates to avoid the use of solvents and minimise our resource use to lower our carbon footprint – we make our packaging as light weight as possible with maximum functionality. We then design with recycled content wherever possible, and design for recycling to ensure we support the circular economy.

Making the right choice
– mono-materials

The market for flexible packaging is undergoing significant change. Since the airing of the BBC’s Blue Planet II series in 2017, consumers around the world have become aware of the challenges of plastic pollution and are seeking significant societal change to minimise plastic use. Despite the vilification of the material, general acceptance is emerging that plastics play a significant environmental role in minimising food waste when designed and used correctly.

Plastics offer significant advantages in terms of protecting goods, extending shelf life, providing durable, robust and impact resistant packaging formats and ensuring efficiency in logistics. As such, Eco Flexibles remains committed to the development of plastic flexible packaging but with a significant focus on ensuring it meet the needs of society today and tomorrow through aligning to the UK waste hierarchy and circularity principles.

Eco Flexibles promotes the use of mono-materials in flexible packaging to assure consumers of their ability to recycle their packaging post use. Whether PET, PP or PE, Eco Flexibles is redesigning packaging across the food industry to utilise mono-materials ensuring plastic packaging can be recycled wherever infrastructure allows.

Eco Flexibles promotes the use of recycled content, wherever possible, in packaging design. Due to the inconsistencies in recycled material availability and quality today, it is not always possible to recommend packaging containing recycled content, especially in direct food contact applications. However, wherever possible, Eco Flexibles will utilise recycled content to lower the carbon footprint of its packaging, boost the circular economy and enable minimisation of the UK Plastics Tax.
