Packaging Case Study – Just. Greens Powder

What they've achieved with the barrier paper and water-based inkjet printing is genuinely pioneering.

Moving away from rigid plastic pots was a natural next step in our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint across the supply chain. However, we needed a partner who could solve the technical challenge without compromising on product protection or presentation. Eco Flexibles delivered exactly that.

The Brief

Purpose-led nutrition company, Conscious Brands, had a very clear ambition to bring its Just. Greens range to market in packaging that was as thoughtfully made as the nutritional supplements inside. The brand, known for its clean-label approach to health and nutrition, needed flexible packaging that would protect its range of health powders through the supply chain, while reflecting its ethos of doing things properly and doing them with sustainability in mind.

Having previously packaged the range in rigid plastic pots, Conscious Brands was ready for a change. The challenge was significant: health powders demand a high-barrier structure to prevent moisture ingress and preserve product quality over an extended shelf life. The packaging also needed sufficient structural rigidity to perform reliably as a stand-up pouch on shelf and had to be easily recyclable after use.

Add to that the need for premium print quality to communicate the brand’s credentials in a crowded health and wellness category, and it was clear this project would require both technical innovation and precision execution. A tall order, but exactly the kind of challenge Eco Flexibles thrives on.

Our Approach

From the outset, this was a project that pushed some boundaries. What Conscious Brands needed didn’t yet exist in the UK market – a digitally printed, water-based inkjet, recyclable paper-based stand-up pouch for health powders. We set out to change that.

Working closely with the Conscious Brands team, our technical experts developed a high-barrier paper-based stand-up pouch structure specifically engineered to meet the demanding requirements of the health powder category. The barrier paper prevents moisture ingress, critical for maintaining powder quality and shelf life over months on shelf, while its inherent rigidity ensures the pouch stands up in every sense of the word.

For print, we turned to our Fujifilm Jet Press FP790, the first press of its kind outside Japan. Printing at 1200 x 1200dpi with water-based inks, the press delivered sharp text reproduction, fine detail and a rich tonal range that brought the Just. Greens brand to life on a challenging substrate. Barrier papers have historically resisted water-based inkjet printing due to their non-porous, repellent nature, but that’s no barrier to Eco Flexibles. Our advanced digital printing workflow, combining Fujifilm’s water-based ink chemistry with precision drop placement and integrated drying, made it possible.

The Result

The Just. Greens stand-up pouches represent a first for the UK market. The first digitally printed, water-based inkjet recyclable paper pouch for health powders produced in the UK.

You might say the new packaging has been given a clean bill of health, ticking every box for recyclability, barrier performance, structural integrity and premium shelf presence.

Conscious Brands can now offer its customers a packaging format that is both functionally excellent and recyclable. In true Eco Flexibles style, the transition away from rigid plastic pots has been achieved without compromise. The pouches protect product integrity, stand confidently on shelf, and deliver the striking brand presence needed to compete in a busy market. Good for the packaging circular economy, and great for the brand. Just. what was needed.

Highlights include:
